Apparently it was taken by the Assyrians, Isa. 10: 5, 9; afterwards conquered by Necho king of Egypt, after the battle of Megiddo, in which Josiah was killed, 2 Chr. 35: 20, where it is CHARCHEMISH. Three years later it was taken by Nebuchadnezzar. Jer. 46: 2. Carchemish has often been associated with the classical Circesium, and placed on maps some 200 miles S.E. of the above, which is judged to be an error.
